About Ken Mehlman: Melding Law With Policy

In 1988, Ken Mehlman was awarded a BA in Government from Franklin and Marshall College, a coeducational liberal arts college located in Lancaster, PA. Ken continued on with his education attending Harvard Law School and receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 1991. Ken currently holds memberships in both the D.C. And Maryland bars.

On Capitol Hill

On Capitol Hill, Ken Mehlman spent many years in policy and political roles, including Legislative Director for Congressman Lamar S. Smith and Chief of Staff for Congresswoman Kay Granger.

Ken Mehlman served as National Field Director for the Bush-Cheney campaign in 2000 and also served as the primaries’ regional political director. Ken was responsible for garnering the highest percentage of votes in Iowa for a Republican in the state’s caucus history. From 2001 to 2003, Ken Mehlman served as White House Director of Political Affairs.

Ken Mehlman continued with his government work by becoming the 62nd chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the campaign manager for President George W. Bush’s re-election in 2004. As RNC chairman, Ken Mehlman helped emphasize the need to reach out to the Hispanic and African American communities. This included historic speeches at the National Council of LaRaza, the NAACP, and the League of Latin American Citizens. During President George W. Bush’s first term, Ken Mehlman served in high-level positions within Congress and the White House and was the White House political director during this Presidential term.

In a press release dated on November 15, 2004, President George W. Bush stated “Ken Mehlman has served the Republican Party and the Administration with honor and distinction. As campaign manager, he helped us achieve our historic 2004 election night gains.”

Awarded

The American Association of Political Consultants awarded Ken Mehlman “Campaign Manager of the Year” in January 2005. This award was given to recognize his highly successful management of the Bush-Cheney presidential ticket.

Comparisons to Sam Walton

Ken Mehlman has been compared by Michael Barone (author of The Almanac of American Politics) to Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. Michael Barone further solidifies this comparison by identifying Ken Mehlman’s revolutionary approach to identifying new customers and constituents.

Current Work

Currently, as a member of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. LLP, Ken Mehlman is responsible for the global external affairs activities of the firm. Corporate marketing, communications, regulatory affairs and public policy, and engagement with the firm and portfolio companies’ key stakeholders are also key responsibilities that Ken Mehlman tackles on a regular basis.

Prior to working at KKR, Ken Mehlman was a partner with Akin, Bump, Strauss, Hauer, and Feld, where he enabled businesses and individuals to manage their risk and seize opportunities within the core of public and business policy.

Ken Mehlman is a trustee of several organizations and entities, including the National Endowment for Democracy, Franklin & Marshall College, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Not only does Ken Mehlman serve on the Senior Advisory Committee of the Harvard University Institute of Politics, but he also is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Ken Mehlman also serves on the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Foundation executive leadership cabinet.
